The official national language is Indonesian. which a kind of Malay that for centuries had been the lingua franca of the archipelago, standards of which are the official languages in many neighborhood , Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei. It was promoted by Indonesian nationalists in the 1920s, and declared the official language under the name of Bahasa Indonesia (Bahasa means Language) on the proclamation of independence in 1945. Therefore Bahasa Indonesia is universal language in Indonesia and it has been used in business, politics, national media, education, and academia. However, Most Indonesians speak at least one of the several hundred local languages and dialects, often as their first language.
